You may be thinking of purchasing a gun, for either self-defense, hunting or target shooting. But as enticing as it may be to just go and get the weapon at this very moment, you need some knowledge about a firearm before owning it and, even more, using it. You must know how to use it, and you should also be aware of the different parts of the gun. So, if you have a shotgun such as the Remington 870 Tac-14 for taking care of intruders, then you should know its parts in order to be able to use it and maintain it. This one is a standard model that is a little different in design. The ATF doesn’t consider it a shotgun, due to the fact that it doesn’t have a stock. It has a barrel that is very short and synthetic furniture. So, as you can see, there are characteristics you should be aware of if you want to use the gun properly. Thus, in this article, you will learn about the different parts of a gun.

1. Grip

The grip is the visible part of the weapon and is meant to let you hold the gun. It is used by your dominant hand for shooting. While holding the gun, you are usually going to use both of your hands. One of them will be the dominant one that will be wrapped around the grip, and the other one will be wrapped around your dominant hand and the grip.

2. Muzzle

The muzzle is situated in the frontal part of the gun, and it’s pretty much the last part that the bullet touches when it’s being shoot. It is included in the barrel system. The barrels usually come in different lengths, so the slide and frame of the gun should be matching these. Also, there are barrels that come threaded, in order to be able to accept a silencer or a suppressor.

3. Barrel

The barrel is one of the most important parts of any gun. It is the tube through which the bullet is being shot. As you could imagine, it’s made of heavy-duty material in order to be able to resist the power of the shot and sent it out of the unit in a powerful way. In addition, barrels are somehow rifled along their internal wall. This helps the accuracy of the weapon overall, thus making the gun more effective.

4. Slide

You can see the slide on the upper area of your gun, as it’s created in order to shelter the whole upper section of the gun. This part of the weapon is used by being manually pulled back, and there’s a mechanism that loads the gun when you do this. To make the pull much easier, there is a ribbed pattern so you can grip it properly. It is made of metal, in order to resist the force of the gun when you shoot it.

5. Trigger

Triggers are the best-known parts of a weapon. Basically, this part is a lever that is responsible for triggering the firing function and letting the bullet free. It’s very common to see guns with Double-Action triggers. With this, it’s enough to pull the trigger to just cause the hammer to be cocked.

6. Forward Sight

It’s always important to see properly what’s in front of you if you want to shoot and hit the target accurately, and there is a gun part that helps with this. It’s known as the forward sight. Usually, it’s a protrusion that you can use to align the front of the weapon with the rear and the rear sighting device. Therefore, it’s an essential component to keep in mind if you want to be able to make accurate shots.

7. Rear Sight

Just like forward sight, the rear sight is meant to help you aim much better. But the difference is that some gun models have a more advanced rear sight than front sight. The rear sight will allow you to align your gun with the front sight in order to aim at the target and make a good shot.

8. Accessories Rail

The accessories rail is a very useful part of a weapon that you can use to mount various accessories. If there are any tactical accessories that you need to use, then this is the gun part that will let you attach them. Some of the accessories that you can attach are flashlights or laser aimers for better accuracy.

9. Trigger Guard

Usually, there will be a trigger guard around the trigger, in order to protect you and the surrounding people from a dangerous situation. Basically, a trigger guard is a ring situated around the trigger’s most exposed area. It is meant to protect the gun from being discharged by mistake.

10. Magazine

Another vital section of a gun is the magazine. This is the part of the weapon that holds the ammunition. More specifically, this is where your bullets are going to be as they’re waiting to be shot.

11. Magazine Spring

You need a certain process in order to help move the cartridges and get them ready to be fired. This is usually achievable through the magazine spring, which is a device that moves the cartridges to their rightful place. There is more pressure exerted upon the spring when there are more cartridges in the magazine.

Final Thoughts

Knowing the parts of a weapon before purchasing one is a must. The more you know about the different components, the easier it will be for you to figure out how to use the gun. Each part is essential and helps the gun shoot, while some parts are also made to help you aim better and hit the target. So, now that you know the parts of a gun, you are ready to purchase your first weapon.
