Breaking in a Leather HolsterWith new advanced manufacturing techniques in Madison, WI leather holsters now form fit to very specific make and models of firearms unlike they ever have in the past.

The tolerances are so close due to the fibers shrinking during manufacturing it may actually be difficult to easily holster or remove the firearm from the holster the first time.

There is a technique to break the holster in that several leather holster manufacturers are recommending consumers in Madison, WI use, and the common terminology is "blocking".

Before you start this technique make sure that your firearm is completely unloaded, and if it is one that has a magazine make sure that the magazine has been removed and it too is unloaded.

There are several steps to take, all are quite easy to follow.

First place the unloaded firearm in a large plastic freezer bag, and if not available any generic plastic kitchen wrap will work, use either a single layer of the plastic freezer bag or two or three layers of the plastic wrap, wrap the firearm yet do not cover up the grip.

Next insert the bag/wrapped firearm slowly into the holster, and as you insert the firearm into the holster start carefully twisting it side to side to minimize any possible tearing of the plastic materials.

Once the firearm has been fully inserted into the holster twist it about 1/16 of an inch in both directions for at least a dozen times.

Once you have the firearm fully seated in the holster, leave it in the holster for about 30 minutes.

Next, remove the firearm from the holster and take it out of the plastic wrapping. The next thing you want to do is take the unloaded firearm and reinserted into the holster, at this point the fit should be quite snug but not loose. If the fit is still too tight just repeat the procedure again until the fit is exactly how you want it.

This video produced by Galco Holsters that actually shows the procedure.
